Palamas del Mar — Bacolod City
by Philly ~ July 13th, 2008
If this is the kind of place you were thinking about when envisioning where you might stay in the Philippines, then I have an answer for you.
Not ‘the answer, because with 7100 plus islands there are nearly that many places to stay in the Philippines, but this, indeed, is a beauty.
It’s also on the island of Negros … far from the madding crowd.
There are a ton
of expats living in Baguio, Cebu and Davao … and these are all indeed nice places too … but everyone goes there.
There are many other places equally as nice … in some cases far nicer that most foreigners ever even consider … unless their spouse hails from the place.
The island of Negros is one place that should be on many people’s list. It’s in the Visayas (Central Philippines), essentially away from typhoons, not subject to daily travel warnings about Muslim extremists and (for the few who are still inspired by a steam whistle) home to some of the world’s last steam-powered commercial railroads.
I have not (yet) been to the Palamas del Mar but it’s been highly recommended to me by several American friends and it meets my criteria of having a website and being reachable from overseas … perhaps if I keep featuring a few of these places the ones who haven’t caught on to the whole Internet thing will wake up and smell the coffee.

Cheers to you for featuring some very nice and attractive places that otherwise might possibly go unnoticed by visitors from North America, Europe and Asia.
At this point, having some sort of even basic web presence is on my list for those places I would consider visiting. It is hard to make necessary contact otherwise.
How many donuts would a bakery shop sell if they were in brown boxes on a shelf inside a cabinet in the back room?…same goes for showcasing a resort site to potential customers/visitors who are several thousand miles away…pictures and an overview are priceless…
speaking of coffee….do you have a coffee maker there?
Cheers,
~marshall

Hi again, That was one place I did stay. Very quiet. Bit far from town for walking but plenty of jeepneys and taxis. Menu a bit limited, but good food. Nice outside bar, and lots of places to swim. Rooms very clean and with aircon. Very popular with the people from Bacolod too.

@marshallmellow: Hi marshall. yes I have a coffee maker, they are readily available and cheap here. I drink US branded coffee though, bought through the S & R membership store, because the Philippine coffee … some of it grown right here in Batangas nearby is good, but ground, marketed and distributed poorly.
What I don’t have is a machine that cranks out In and Out burgers, alas and alack.

@John in Austria: Thanks so much for the first-hand report, John. That’s at least three people I have heard from who recommends the place. I have an American ‘Net freind who moved to bacolod last year, I have a visit to meet up with him … and ride the steam trains high up on my to-do list.

Where are these steam trains Phil? I have never heard about them. Perhaps a report on them from you would be interesting. I researched sites around Bacolod before going there, but never came across the trains. Again, lack of website I would presume. Mambucal is well-known, but didn’t get a chance to see it.

@John in Austria: Here’s the latest reort I have that seems to be writtne by people who know one end of a locomotive from the other. I note the guys who produced this report are going back/have gone back this year, I haven’t got a reporton that yet.
My son met a fellow last year who had been to at least one of the lines in 2006 and not only were the engines still operating but the tourist was allowed to drive one … quite a thrill.
I hope to get some more info and post it soon. http://www.farrail.net/pages/trip-reports-engl/philippinean-steam-2007.html
