One of Many Ways You Could Earn a an Honest, Decent Living — Anywhere

I’ve been very busy this week.  Haven’t had a lot of time to write general interest articles about living in the Philippines.  Maybe next week will be more conducive to writing … who knows.  It’s also been hotter than I have ever seen it before here on the outskirts of Metro manila … I’ve been feeling the heat for sure … it can really sap you.  And I can’t just sit in front of an air conditioner all day.  Even though I have been very lucky compared with huge areas of the Philippines … no blackouts.

Anyway, I tossing out something that has been very popular on my Retired Pay blog.  This is an explanation of one of the ways people can make a sustainable, long-term income on line without writing a blog and doing some of the other things people seem to jump at, without realizing the time and effort involved.  Might be interesting reading for some.  But there is a sales pitch included, and I am an affiliate (commissioned salesperson) for the program I’m talking about, so if that turns you off, don’t ruin your day, skip over it and I’ll try to chat with you again tomorrow, sans salesmanship.

Being a management consultant is one way many folks have found to make a good living for themselves.  And if you have the education, experience, patience and personal skills to keep yourself employed as a management consultant on at least a semi-regular basis, it can certainly work well for you.

After all. many of my readers here are retirees.  Perhaps retired from the US military and now looking for a way to supplement that retirement annuity without having to search out and hold down another regular J*O*B. (My shorthand for “Just Over Broke” by the way.)

I also have many senior citizen readers … welcome, I am one myself you know … who want to empower their retirement and not live, heart in mouth, in breathless anticipation of what the “benevolent government” is going to do next to try to balance the budget on the backs of the elderly.

Or perhaps you are any age but unsatisfied with how your life is going and wishing there was something better out there.

Maybe you are a person living in one country, say the US or the UK or Australia, who dearly wants to move to another country, perhaps the Philippines, because you want to completely change your lifestyle … but you have no idea how you would support yourself there.

They say to always write blog posts for your readers … how can I write an article of interest to all those different folks?

Let me take a shot at finding some common thread that pretty much applies to all of you .. Making Money.

They say money can’t buy happiness, and perhaps they may have a point, but having been broke in the past and very much ‘not so broke’ now, I can assure you that it is one hell of a lot easier to be happy if you have money in the bank.

How do most of you figure that you will ever put money in the bank?

Well, if you are like the majority, you have been brainwashed for the last couple hundred years that you go into debt to go to college, then “sell yourself” to some faceless company who “owns you” for the next 40 years or so, and then if you are lucky enough to live that long, spits you out the door at the age of 60-something or 70-something with a mediocre pension that can be taken away in the blink of an eye.

Notice how government pensions didn’t get a Cost Of Living (COLA) increase this current year?  What do you think is coming next?  Notice how many people who were once sitting pretty with their income from Money market Funds and IRA’s (Individual retirement Accounts) now have to scrimp and save just to deal with semi-important things, like keeping the electricity turned on?

What if there were a better way?  A way that is not based on the generosity or management skills of the government?  Or how much a corporation like BP decides to dole out each year (I’m sure glad I don’t have a J*O*B with those sons-of-bitches at the moment.)

What if there was a legal, sustainable way to be sure you didn’t have to go without getting your teeth fixed because the “bright young star” manger of your investment fund lost everyone but him billions last year by buying insanely stupid mortgage derivatives that an imbecile on the street is smart enough to know are phony?

Well, forget the what if’s … there is a way.  This is not the only way, for sure, but it is something I can recommend and still sleep well at night.  It’s called Affiliate Marketing and I know it works, because I have the deposits in my bank accounts and the paid income tax receipts that prove it works.

I’m not talking any investment at all .. except perhaps a how to do it manual which I’ll talk about in a minute … with absolutely zero risk.

I’m not talking any sort of investment, like stocks or chasing pips in the Forex game

I’m not even talking “putting up a web site”, although many affiliate marketers do, there are proven ways to make good money with no web site at all.

I’m not talking building mailing lists or pestering relatives and friends with those stupid multilevel marketing programs … you need never email or speak with a single stranger.

I’m certainly not talking sales .. that’s totally the job of the folks you affiliate with.

And I am certainly not talking blogging .. because although I love what I am doing, making money with a blog is really a long-term investment of a lot of time and more than little effort .. and 99% of the blogs you see out there never make one thin dime.

A word or two about what affiliate marketing is:

… In a nutshell, affiliate marketing is an arrangement between an online merchant and affiliate (you), in which the affiliate earns a commission for generating sales, leads and/or clicks for the merchant’s web site.

For example, many credit card companies will pay you between $5 and $20 in commission for each visitor that you send to their site who completes a credit card application, and up to $55 for those whose applications are approved.

That’s a great commission, and although many companies pay less, there are also many companies that pay much MORE!

Here’s another example.

If you promote this Elite TR6633 Treadmill which sells for $6,495.00 as an affiliate of MegaFitness, they will pay you a 10% commission… or $649.50!

"Fantastic!", you say.

You’re absolutely right!

How much you will earn depends in part on the products you choose to sell, and in the Super Affiliate Handbook I show you exactly how to find the best companies and products to promote. …

Sounds pretty simple Dave, so with all this lead-in, where is this going?

Fair question.

If you want to learn how to make money with affiliate marketing, I suggest that rather than spend months or years putzing around, you get a simple course from a real expert, study it AND APPLY IT (no course is worth a hoot if you don’t take action … this is the reason 99% of the people who “think about” or “study” making money on line never will … they don’t ever take action).

Seems sensible, Dave, but there are seemingly millions of people out there selling information on Affiliate marketing .. how do we know your recommendation (or anyone else’s for that matter) is worth reading?

Again, fair question.  Let me answer with a little story from real-life, pre-Internet days:

Years ago, long before the I
nternet came along my mom worked for a fellow with a really cute little work at home business.  He literally worked from home … his one car garage was filled with printed products, mailing supplies and my mom’s desk.

She would sit and open mail for a couple hours in the morning, writing names on address labels and putting checks and cash (yes people used to send cash in the mail) into neat piles for bank deposits, and then she spent the afternoon stuffing the product into envelopes and applying the address labels and stamps.

On her way home she went to the post office to drop off the outbound mail and through the drive-through window of her employer’s bank to make deposit of the checks and cash that had come in that day.

The product?  Simply a little 12 or 14 page manual about how to fix hydraulic jacks that, well, wouldn’t jack any more.  It’s something the business owner had learned in a couple years working for a repair company who paid him a pittance to repair jacks.

When he lost that job, instead of schlepping around to find another dirty, low-level job fixing other people’s jacks and making at least three times his salary in profit for a new employer, he tried something different.  He just took what he learned and wrote down the simple parts, and had a little mini-booklet printed and set out to sell it.

Now how did he sell it?  Well that’s the interesting part.  With no Internet (this was years ago, mind you .. in the 1960’s) and no chance of making mass market media like TV or radio spots work, he looked at special interest magazines … “Popular Science” was one of his best advertising venues .. world-wide circulation and not too high a price for a little classified add in the back.

But could you start a business from a classified ad?  How would you know if it would work?

Well my mom’s boss explained his secret to me, and it was dirt-simple.  Read magazines you think your prospects might also read.  Look at the ads to see if one of yours would ‘fit’.  Then go to the library and look up issues of that magazine from 5 or more years ago, noting who was advertising then who still is advertising today … if you see many ‘familiar faces’, bingo … ads in that magazine produce, since people have been paying for them for years and years.

Today, the Internet is my “Popular Science”.  But the same key ways of deciding what is worthwhile hold true.  At least 5 years ago I started making money online, and one of the ‘regulars’ I came across was a lady name of Rosalind Gardner.  And she’s still here today as a leader in the field, and still selling a very popular “repair manual” after 5 or more years.  There HAS to be something to it, no?  Or how could she even afford to run a scam that long.  I can assure you this is no scamHere’s a little excerpt of her journey….

This is the amazing true story of how a woman with NO business experience became a Super Affiliate earning $500,000+ (*) per year selling other people’s stuff online .

Dear Aspiring Affiliate Marketer,

Rosalind
Gardner, Author of the Super Affiliate HandbookAlthough I hate the term and don’t own a tiara, my colleagues call me the "Affiliate Marketing Queen". :-) A January 2009 trade magazine pegs me as the female affiliate marketer (since 1998) with the most experience.

Over the years, thousands of ‘regular, non-technical folks’ (just like you — and me) have learned how to start and run their own successful affiliate marketing businesses using the methods I teach in the Super Affiliate Handbook (and as an industry expert speaker, magazine columnist and consultant) and YOU can learn them too!

I teach by example – using  my own affiliate sites. From blog installation, to design, content creation and all methods of marketing – I STILL do it all. (Note: Many other affiliate training packages use MY affiliate sites as examples without my permission. That’s because those so-called ‘trainers’ don’t have affiliate sites. They pretend to be working affiliates to take your money, but they don’t have any real experience.)

So, if you’re tired of bogus claims and hype and want to learn how affiliate marketing really works, keep reading … here’s a lady who has been succeeding at this game more than 5 years now … she has staying power, her methods work, and they can work for you, if you chose to actually stop "searching" and start "doing".

As Rosalind says, your search can end here, just the way my mom’s employer built a whole successful work at home business out of a simple magazine ad … merely by leveraging knowledge and common sense he already had.  Well you leverage yours? This is a fork in your road, as Yogi once said, “Take It”.

Telecommute From The Philippines With Ease — Free!

You know how many times I have mentioned Skype as a tool for both personal and business communication … especially if you are planning to live in the Philippines and earn you money elsewhere … either by telecommuting or setting up you own web-based business.

Here’s an advance announcement of what is coming soon … actually already available in “beta” format, I’ll wait until it is released in ‘shrink wrap” format myself … should be soon:

If you’ve got a Web cam, you can now add video to Skype’s party line.

Skype 5.0 beta

(Credit: Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)

Skype’s new beta with added conference calling features could be just what the doctor ordered for low-cost international meetings and planning sessions among family and friends. On Thursday, Skype 5.0 beta for Windows became available as a free download.

Instead of initiating video calls to just one other recipient, as in the stable version of Skype, you can host video chats for up to five people. Unfortunately, each of them has to have a Web cam and Skype 5.0 beta installed on a Windows PC in order for video conferencing to work. This limitation could get in testers’ ways.

We got word about the update last week when Skype announced a new set of calling plans to benefit those calling mobile phones. We haven’t had time to stage an elaborate overseas calling conference yet, but our plans are in the works, so watch this space for our hands-on evaluation.

Skype certainly isn’t the first to bring video conferencing to everyday users. The free Skype competitor VoxOx offers video conferencing for up to three callers; the freemium ooVoo can support up to six.

If you do try out Skype’s beta video party line, let us know in the comment what you think. Remember that beta software is neither as less polished nor stable as final software, so keep that in mind if you try out Skype 5.0 beta for Windows. Mac users can expect to see a version of Skype’s group video calls for that computing platform later this year.

Jessica Dolcourt reviews the latest and greatest smartphone apps, in addition to a healthy dose of Windows software. E-mail Jessica and follow her on Twitter.

Thanks a big tip of the blog hat to Jessica and CNet for this very newsworthy report

And don’t forget, I showed you how to get a very worthwhile "Blueprint" on building a business with Skype and the Internet here:

OK, I looked this over since I posted it, and I also have some questions from many people who aren’t really clear on a couple concepts. One question I have had several times is, "If this is so easy, why aren’t you doing it, Dave"? Well that’s a very good question. part one of the answer is, I didn’t say it was easy. I said that anyone with normal spoken English skills and a computer and the free program Skype can do it, but it’s work.

It’s a legitimate business opportunity that you can pursue from anywhere you live, and it requires virtually no investment .. but … like any conventional or self-employed venture, it requires effort.  I’m 65 years young and I enjoy being retired.  that’s one reason I don’t teach English online as a business (Although I was really, really tempted to bu7y that example site I showed you earlier ;-) )

The second reason is, like any successful business, it requires a certain amount of setting up, planning and developing specific techniques for the market … and I spend way too much time on other profitable on-line ventures as it is … I don’t care to start something else again from scratch.  I’d rather build the properties I currently have to be bigger and better.

But I di the next best thing.  I found those of you who are interested in a sensible, doable way to make real money online for performing a necessary and useful service, a complete package on how to set up a working business, step by step, written by an American living in Japan who earns money teaching English online.

An online English teaching journey and how you too can teach English online and get money:

Teaching English online report My name is John Buchanan, and I’m an online English teacher.  I love to travel and help people.

In 2005 I moved to Osaka, Japan with thoughts of meeting new people, witnessing the culture and exploring the other mysteries that awaited.  I never thought I would become self-employed after being hired by a Japanese conversation school by the name of Nova.
With them I taught English to Japanese students from all over Japan by using a computer and the Internet. For myself, I paid attention, learned a lot, and eventually adapted a working strategy that paid nicely. …

I did all of my teaching with a webcam, microphone and their special software. The setup was pretty neat because it allowed me to show pictures, play audio recordings, write with a typing tool, as well as the ability to draw with colors.

Pretty cool! I got paid to sit and talk and teach English and draw funny pictures for students.

After I got to Japan, I was blown away by how much money students were paying on average for a 40 minute one-on-one private lesson over the Internet.

Guess how much?

About $70.00 for one 40 minute English lesson was the average! My eyebrows flew off my face when I heard that number. …

If you want a no BS look at the details facts and figures of how one man does this, for real, and you want a professionally written step by step course, complete with custom video instructions on things like how to set up Skype to do this teaching professionally, then I suggest you read John’s Teaching English Online sales page.

I find his facts, figures and conclusions are very believable, based on personal experience, and best of all, the offer is completely risk free .. if it ain’t what you want, you get back very penny.  A no nonsense course in how to make teaching English online, from anywhere, work for you.

Will you make a move, or will you wait and see if the government makes things better just for you?

There’s More To Life Than “If Only”

This article really has two intended audience segments.

The first is that segment of all backgrounds and citizenships who continually pine for a way to earn a living that is independent of where they live … in many cases so that they can move to/live in the Philippines instead of where they live now.

The second group is Filipinos with similar desires and goals?

Why would I separate the Filipino readers from the larger group?  Am I some sort of racist?  Well, not really, but I’m a realist.

In the nearly 10 years now that I have been working directly with people who want to make their home in the Philippines I have encountered about every sort of argumentative naysayer known to man … but no one except a Filipino has ever told me, “There’s no opportunity in the Philippines”.

So if you are the garden variety  “Doubting Thomas’ and just want to tell me I am wrong because opportunities to earn a living online just don’t exist … well so be it.  The fact that there is plenty evidence, including me, who prove you wrong will never change your mind.  Perhaps the next article will be more to your liking.

But if you are one of those convinced there is no opportunity here in the Philippines, or even worse convinced as many of my Filipino relatives and friends seem to be, that Americans seem to possess some sort of in-built talent that allows them to take advantage of opportunities while Filipinos are damned to always come in second best, perhaps you will like reading this:

I hope the last three articles in this series have been of some value.  I wanted to acquaint many who have the idea that English teaching is only for the professional educators with the realities … especially on line.  Everyone who reads this blog already possesses a valuable commodity … their language skills.  For some, it putting those skills to use may provide a real earning opportunity.

Philippine Living — Online English Thoughts 3

When I mention the opportunities in online learning I notice that a lot of people seem to try to make this whole process way, way harder than it has to be.  You can, of course make it just as hard as you want it to be … that’s your prerogative, but if you want to start making dollars, today, then this is one strategy you can implement for very little more than you already have invested in a computer and internet access.

These techniques will work no matter if you are US born, Filipino born or “made in” any other nation, and they will work equally as well from the Philippines, from the US, or anywhere else.

Step One: Forget about business partners, services and other places where you sign up and they take your income.  This is a low dollar, grass roots, hands on effort and I want you to keep all the profit.   By the way, nothing in this article is an affiliate link or anything else that I profit from … just so you know.

Step Two: You need a way to receive money, so pen a PayPal account.  There are other online money transfer providers but PayPal is the largest in the world and now, bingo, you are set up with a banking service and a way to accept credit cards.

Step Three: You need a way to interact with your students so open a Skype account.  Presto.  You now have a way to interact by voice and/or video with your prospective students

Step Four: Decide what to charge.  prices I have seen here in the Philippines average around a couple hundred pesos per hour … you can learn more from the next step. (hint, here in the Philippines, Koreans wanting English tutoring typically pay around P1,000 per hour.  Don’t start too low.

Step Five: Type in a phrase like “learn English online for Koreans from a native English speaker” (try both with and without the quotation marks) and start exploring.  You will learn a lot from following up some of these offers.  You’ll see freelancers, online school, books and other learning aids available, and more (don’t succumb to buying shiny objects).

Step Six: based on your market research above, decide of a name you want to be known by and got to www.blogger.com and start posting about your new business.  What do you write?  Simple, I just gave you the outline for the first six posts, write about your experiences and the good, the bad and the ugly about getting your feet on the ground in this business.

Step Seven: Write a blog post that mentions your business, hours of operation, how much you charge, etc.  Don’ write ordinary “blog post” stuff, this blog is your business website by another name.

A roound tuitStep Eight:  Get 1,000 visitors to your blog.  Here’s a way to do that for free.  (remember, don’t buy anything!)

Then keep building traffic.

So far you are in a position to accept money, have away to communicate, are building an online presence and you are learning the ropes.  Total investment so far?  Zero dollars and no cents.

What are you waiting for now, an engraved invitation?  Or perhaps you need a “Round TuIt” … you know, one of those things that everything is always on hold for until you get around to it?  This could be the day you started being a success, but it absolutely will not be if you don’t make a move.  You are guaranteed to miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Thanks > Kollage Kid

Do You Want To Earn a Living Where You Choose, Or Do You Want To Sit and Watch?

Some months ago I recall writing about these folks and getting virtually no feedback at all, good or bad.  One gentleman wrote to take me to task for promoting a free seminar because it required calling in, he didn’t want to pay toll charges, and he didn’t want to bother using the totally free VOIP service I recommended to avoid an toll charges.  I’m guessing perhaps he wanted someone to come by and spoon feed him the answers.  I don’t do that.

The Portable lifestyle teleseminar

I do, however, have the answer to that perennial question about how you can earn a living in the Philippines, or in any other country you choose … you can find out if it is for you by simply attending a free, online seminar that will be held, especially for you, right in the privacy of your own home.  You will, sorry to, have to provide your own spoon ;-)

Let me ask you a couple questions ….

  • Have you lost your job?
  • Are you worried about layoffs or cutbacks?
  • Are you ‘stuck in a rut’ in your present work, with younger, better educated folks passing you buy?
  • Hate your boss or the daily commenting grind to get to a boring place for yet another day?
  • Wishing you were living in the Philippines with someone you love, perhaps, earning a Western-standard living?
  • Envious of people who seem to be able to travel the world, staying only in places they enjoy?

Well, if you answered “Yes” to one or more of these questions, you really need to take an hour or so out of your busy schedule and join a free informational seminar from a clever couple I have come to know quite well.

http://www.theportablelifestyle.com/primer’>Jon Tompkins & Kathryn Alice are married with four children. They have been traveling internationally for almost 2 years, spending more than a month in each of 11 tropical countries. They run successful internet businesses as well as a consulting business. It took them just a few months to get ready to go, and they have already shepherded others into this lifestyle. Accomplished speakers and writers, they have co-created bestselling products together and their work has been featured in Psychology Today, Parade, The New York Times, Body+Soul, Newsweek and on Montel Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, KXLU & KPFK radio, and NBC television.

Jon and Kathryn are sponsoring another of their 100% free seminars to teach you the methods to make your own lifestyle which emulates theirs.  These folks are ‘doers’, not talkers, they already made their lifestyle portable, so what about you?  http://www.theportablelifestyle.com/primer’>Watch, listen and learn.

Make Money In The Philippines — Doesn’t Matter Where You Live

Usually I write about business in the Philippines and making money in the Philippines on Fridays and/or Saturdays, but this one has a short lead time … it’s an opportunity that will be gone by Friday.  Will you look at this and say, “Yeah, right , Dave” and then move on to something else? … or will you take advantage of professional education to teach you about something that you can earn from, at no risk, whatever your nationality and wherever you live.

If you prefer a J.O.B. (Just Over Broke) way of life, this is not for you … but if you want to learn how the big boys do it, join in … the entire cost is you giving up an hour of watching TV drivel or playing on your Facebook page for yet another hour … we all can afford an hour less of that stuff.

There is nothing like ‘free’ to catch my attention.  What about yours?

After the word ‘free’ catches my eye, I then look to see what what the source is … and when it’s Trump University, I generally take advantage and see what ‘the Donald’ has to say.  (by the way, Donald Trump is bullish on the Philippines, I’ve written about it here before)  Stop chasing imaginary dreams and thinking of reasons why you can’t and instead dig in and make your own future.

Philippine (or US) Business You Can Do — Watch Videos

I’ve written quite a few articles about using the combination of the Internet and video to make or expand a business.  This can certainly work for you in the US or in the Philippines or when dividing one’s time between two countries, as many of my readers want to do.

One thing there is a demand for … as in people buy … is home or business security and monitoring.  In particular there is a market connected with the Philippines for three categories of folks that come to mind immediately:

  • Folks who have a house or business in the Philippines, but want to travel for days, weeks or months at a time.
  • Folks who leave a house or business behind in the US or other home country and want a way to keep a ‘virtual eye’ on their property while they are in the Philippines.
  • Filipino residents, especially businessmen or women with property or businesses in different parts of the Philippines who want a ‘virtual security guard"’.

The business plan?  Simple.  Either provide the equipment, hookups and training for any of these potential clients whom you decide to target and let them arrange their own monitoring.  To many of you this may sound foolish, because if you can do it (and you probably can. if you know enough Internet and computer technology to be reading this post, you can learn easily), then why wouldn’t the potential clients do it themselves?

Well the reason people will pay for the service is the same reason people will pay for snowplows to clear their driveways, janitors to clean their offices, mechanics to change the oil in their cars, etc.  They value their time doing something else or they would rather someone else get their hands dirty.

The other way I see a huge opportunity here is that there are thousands of potential clients in the US, the Philippines and other countries who just want someone to watch and call the police if things go wrong.  There are dozens if not hundreds of companies in the YS making a good business from this need.  If you are already living in the Philippines or are able to set something up here, you are miles ahead of any company who pays ‘screen watchers’ in the US.  You can set up a monitoring station here for systems you sell yourself, or outsource yourself to companies already in the business in the US.  Hey, after all, people are already operating call centers just to take orders ay McDonalds drive thru windows, this job is simpler.

The last time I suggested something along this line there was a bit of discussion regarding liability and bandwidth,  Let me address both those issues briefly:

  • Liability: I may be naive, but I see no large liability issues here.  The service will always be provided on a ‘best effort’ basis.  In my last consulting job back in the US I worked a security contract with a top US form to monitor our software development and server facility.  Believe me, they were responsible;le for nothing except doing their job to the best of their ability.  All you need is a good lawyer to write you a tight contract (remember, I am not a lawyer and you need a lawyer for legal advice) … and for many of us who live here in the Philippines, what is anyone going to be able to sue us for, anyway?
  • Bandwidth: As soon as you mention video many people get up in arms about server loads, time for windows to open, etc.  Many of these concerns are valid, but only if you do video ‘wrong’.  When I talk about monitoring surveillance cameras and other alarms at a customer’s premise, such as motion sensors, window or door switches and such. I am talking about:
    • Having a DVR (Digital Video Recorder … Tivo is a common brand name but there are much cheaper Tivo substitutes out there) that spools the video to disk, on site.  There is no reason for ‘full period’ video to ever have to cross the ‘net to your monitoring computer unless and until an ‘event’ occurs at the client’s site.
    • There are many different security management software packages out there that will slow down the frames per second from cameras until something in the field of view changes, manage multiple cameras on one screen, and so on.  Google is your friend.

So, there’s some thoughts for making a business today, prompted by this video of a real world housebreaking, caught by the owner who was monitoring remotely over the internet and simply called the police when she saw the intruder.  The video doesn’t make it clear but the report I read said the police arrived in time to catch the perpetrators in the act … thus not only was the lady’s property protected, but two nasty customers won’t be breaking into your house or mine.  Video monitoring works.

Philippine Business Resources

I write a lot about doing business in the Philippines (or anywhere else you may happen to live) online.  The term “online” immediately turns a lot of people off.  They start thinking about some of those spammy/scammy “buy my route to success” courses or worse yet, the male enhancement or female enhancement products.  Yuk.

Yes, it’s true that technically those bottom feeder folks are working online too, but I focus on ‘real’ business ideas.  A lot of people also have this attitude that money online is not ‘real’.  I don’t actually comprehend where this thought comes from, but a belief doesn’t have to be based on facts in order for it to seem very real indeed to the person who holds it.  All I can say is, I finally finished my taxes today (online, of course) and I wish one of you out there who thinks that online money isn’t real would contact the US IRS and make a case for me … it seems real when you pay taxes on it ;-)

Just a couple days back I published an article on teaching conversational English (or any other language you might be competent in) on line.  One of the resources I mentioned was a service called Skype.  In fact I pointed you to a Skype case study of a high-end English “brick and mortar” school who was expanding (profitably I might add) their services out from their real-world building into the rest of the world using Skype as one of their primary tools.

There are other ways to use the Internet, with or without your computer) to use the Internet as a world-wide free, or very cheap, tool for business communication, but Skype is what I use and it has some tremendous advantages if you are starting from square one.  I just came across this article which confirms how big Skype really is in the “real world” now.  If you still live with ‘wire based” carriers, or if you are thinking of investing in any of them, think again.  Like “dead tree” newspapers, they are last century technology and Voice Over Internet protocol (VOIP) carriers are where it is at, for at least the first part of this century.  Doesn’t matter if your need is to chat with family members around the world or to make a business for yourself that will cause you to forget about that antiquated thing called a “job”, VOIP is where it is at and Skype is in the lead:

Skype Tops All in International Calls

By Ryan Singel EmailMarch 24, 2009 | 12:29:40 PM

Picture_5 Skype is now the largest provider of international phone calls in the world.

That’s according to telecom research firm Telegeography, which estimates that Skype’s cross-border traffic shot up to 33 billion minutes in 2008, up more than 40% from the year before.

That includes about 25 million minutes of free "Skype-to-Skype" traffic that travels only through internet pipes and doesn’t even go over the traditional telephone network. A little over 8 billion minutes are paid "Skype Out" calls that go from a user’s computer to traditional telephones….

Now that you have communication needs in place, what else is available online that can help you run a business … or even make a business out of “thin air”?

Here’s one tool that a person could make money with right away, especially given the tight job situation in the US.  be and online assistant/virtual office staff person and be independent.  Work for a number of doctors, dentists, lawyers, service provider firms and drive their business profits higher, while they pay you only a fraction of what they would have to pay and in-office ‘real’ staff member:

Latiss example This company, Lattiss, essential provides a basic business web site and online appointment and payment service for nay business.  It’s priced very low, a completely usable version is actually free.  The for pay versions are very little more, on the order of a buck or two per day per business you would serve.  Basically Lattiss’s business plan is to sell their service direct to business owners who need it … and what business doesn’t have a need for scheduling appointments, service calls, product demos, classes or even payments?

Their model is working fine, but you also can imagine a., they can’t catch the eye of every business in the world and b., many business owners aren’t going to sign up/set up an account with them.  That’s where you come in, my bussing entrepreneur friend, of any nationality, based anywhere.

You approach business (there are millions to chose from, maybe you focus on every business in your home town in the USA to start with).  You offer them an online presence, an online appointment system, and online staffer to keep the appointments straight for a very small fraction of what their monthly bill would be for a ‘real’ staffer to do the work, and then you use whatever flavor of Lattiss is best to actually set up the account and keep things rolling.  It’s like being a web hosting provider and website developer all rolled into one, except you don’t have to know anything about the technology … all you have to do is stay in touch with your client, and , if appropriate, make those appointment remainder calls that doctors and dentists love so well, mainly because they are proven, real-world money makers.  Piece of cake.

OK, there’s enough ideas for one day.  Maybe this idea is not for you, but it may open your eyes to something easier and more smart than the old standby of opening an unprofitable Internet cafe or competing with the other 7 sari-sari stores on your block.

My idea here isn’t to deliver a ready to open turn-key business package, but more to stimulate your thoughts.  They way I see it, there are two ways to make money in business these days.  You can get a job cleaning the toilets in the rest rooms, or you can be the owner of the whole office building.  The beauty of moving yourself online is, the investment required is virtually the same … zero or close to it.

I know which one appeals to me the most.
