Here’s a neat podcast I came across a week or so back. As some of you know I have a couple good friends down in Davao City, Philippines who run a business (actually several businesses) here in the Philippines. Their names are Joe Magnotti and Justin Cook. They are both US bred and born fellows (ever wonder why everyone says born and bred? Don’t you have to be bred before you can be born?) Strange that English language of ours )
Anyway, Joe and Justin came here to the Philippines to set up their own call center operation for a mortgage broker company in the US, back right around the great collapse of the real estate market back in the US in 2008/2009. Sounds like they took a big risk, eh?
Well they did, and as you might have guessed, their original business plan pretty much went down the dumper along with home sales back in the USA. Scary, eh?
Well, maybe so, but Justin and Joe just focused on making money and succeeding and building up many other alternative businesses … using the office space they had already rented and the employees they had already hired to sit in little work stations and “flog” mortgage packages to homebuyers in the USA.
They have so many things going on I doubt they’ll ever go back to the cold calling to flog mortgage deals.
But this article isn’t about how Justin and Joe do business in the Philippines. It’s about how they make out living in the Philippines. And, of course, the question that 99.9% of my readers seem to always be asking, HOW MUCH DOES IT COST THEM TO LIVE IN THE PHILIPPINES?
Just click on the link and listen, or go to iTunes and download the broadcast (it’s free). Here’s more actionable information about living in the Philippines and how much it costs than in any 10 of my blog posts … and these fellows are pretty young and earning a living here, not old retired guys like me. What’s life REALLY like as an expat living in the Philippines? This is a question we got from a listener a couple of weeks ago and we realized we’d never really gone into depth about what it’s like here. Did you have visions of us sipping tropical drinks on the beach while we run Flippa auctions and build sites? Maybe you thought we were huddled in the corner of a Nipa hut, dodging the raindrops from the leaky roof and wolfing down some dog BBQ?
It’s interesting to hear some of the myths and distortions about life here and we thought we’d dispel some of those in the podcast. It’s a fantastic place, but it definitely has some disadvantages that we’ll cover as well.
Listen or Download Justin and Joe’s excellent podcast about what living (and earning a living) in the Philippines is REALLY like.
A few of the highpoints of the broadcast I felt were extremely valuable:
- Cost Of Living
- Grapes are gold but mangos aplenty!
- Living Conditions
- Pockets of luxury
- Attitudes Towards Expats
- The VIP treatment
- Cultural Differences
- False sense of familiarity
- Business In The Philippines
Unlike most of my ramblings, nothing to read. Just give a listen
(Oh, and by the way, nothing is being sold here .. it’s just Justin and Joe’s contribution to the community of us who live here in the Philippines. Enjoy)
