Teaching English Online.
Yeah, I’ve written about this before. Many times actually. You can start reading here Live in the Philippines — Online English Business Thoughts if you want to know more.
But today I’d like to explore a bit about where the real money is.

Strong language? Well, yeah, because it’s not that I want to insult anyone, but I want you out there who keep looking around for a J*O*B (Just Over Broke) to Wake The Fire trUCK Up, think more of yourself and stop selling yourself short.
I have often heard from fellow expats working at so-called English teaching jobs here in the Philippines that paid, almost literally, peanuts. P 100 (about $2.00 USD) an hour …sometimes even less. As a recent political figure has often been heard to say, “Disgusting”.
Not Only Cheap, Often Illegal
If you are a foreigner it is absolutely illegal to earn money from a Philippine source unless you have a permanent visa (which allows work here in the Philippines, not all do) and also a work permit from the DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment). In my experience the person or entity employing foreign workers illegally does not have much to fear from the law. (maybe they do, but it’s not material to what we’re talking about here).
What’s really important is that you, the foreigner, are absolutely responsible for you own actions.
An Alternative To Taking Big Risks For Puny Returns
Spend in Pesos but Earn in Dollars.
In other words, teach English yourself, and collect directly from your students as you teach. Why make a middle man rich, and risk visa issues as you do so. If you earn income from outside the Philippines, you are NOT “working in the Philippines”, so no issues with Immigration and with the DOLE. Also, your earnings are NOT subject to taxation from the Philippine BIR.
That’s why I have written so much on this subject already. It is literally the best of both worlds. Live in the Philippines but Earn From the Rest of the World.
But today I want to show you an even better idea.
Who Really Made Money From the Gold Rush?
Ever hear of the great California gold rush? Of course you have. Millions flocked to the California gold fields, and a few (actually very few) even got rich prospecting and mining.
But who consistently did get rich off the gold fever?
Those Who Sold the Shovels
That’s right. Overall the people who made the most from the California gold rush, consistently, were the entrepreneurs who sold the miners the shovels, the gold pans, the food and other supplies and, interestingly enough, the denim work clothes they needed for the rugged, dirty work of mining.
Ever hear of Levi Strauss? Of course you have. In fact there’s a good chance you’re even wearing some of his company’s present day products as you sit here reading this. Strauss moved to San francisco and founded a company selling rugged, copper-riveted blue jeans (now called Levi’s) to the miners.
And his company is still selling to this day, and you and others are still buying, many, many years after the last pan of gold was taken out of Sutter Creek.
Wait a Minute, What’s This Got To Do With Teaching English Online?
Well just to open your mind to the many different ways one can make money online in dollars while living in the Philippines and spending pesos, take a look at what this lady does.
Join 80,000 students who get my lessons by e-mail, and you’ll get a free e-book + MP3s.
This is an online/blogging colleague of mine, Shayna. She used to teach in an English school, trading her time for money and watching how the system did not really work.
So instead she now creates and sells the “shovels” of English learning.
Courses by email, simple textbooks, guides on the teaching itself, and many more products.
Do you think she’s making money? Well she claims over 80,000 students over the years so what do you think? I think she’s doing quite well. Read more about Shayna’s products here.
I am not affiliated or connected to Shayna in any way, just passing on this great idea).
Basically, if you don’t feel confident going out and teaching directly to students online, then why not become a “shovel supplier”?
This idea, by the way, could work in other fields aside from Teaching English Online.
