I’ve been away for a couple days on a little journey up north to Pampanga, Bataan and Zambales provinces. My son came for a visit from the USA and I was showing him around.
We stayed three nights at a nice hotel on the former Subic Bay US Navy base. Very nice indeed. Many people predicted disaster when the US bases closed, but it has actually worked out well. Subic has many tourist businesses but more important to the economy is the commercial airport, the container port and two large shipyards that have recently been built. It’s a going concern and a good example of how a community can take a former military base and make something useful from it.
Here’s the beach in front of our hotel. quite nice for the price. More updates will follow, I’m still touring.

do you know if the local hospital process MEDICARE payments?
Hello Levy,
Thanks for visiting and for your useful comment. There are no hospitals operating now on Subic, so far as I know. There are anumber of good hospitals in adjacent Olongapo.
None, however, is useful for Medicare, unfortuantely. Medicare does not pay outside the US 9except for certain emergency coverage while tralleng).
This is a distinct disadvantage to any US citizen thinking of retiring overseas. It’s short-sighted on the part of Medicare, becuase often the costs are dramatically cheaper, but I know of no changes coming soon. Since many commercial insurance companies are actully sending people overseas for certain care, perhaps there will be a change … nothing on the horizon that I see, though.
