Simple Philippine Things Are Only Simple After You Know Them

balikbayan-box_thumb.png

This would not be the first time I have been trapped by my own assumptions, but it is still an eye opener. It’s boring to write about things already long-explained and in common use.  Unless, of course, one’s audience is not familiar with that common use, and then. one realizes, often inadvertently, that one has been writing ‘over the heads’ of the intended audience.  Embarrassing.  I apologize. Recently I mentioned something here on PhilFAQS, where I attempt to answer … [Read more...]

Happy Birthday, Karl, and What a Map Can Tell You About Retiring in the Philippines

map-two_thumb

Happy Birthday Karl Swartz and the team at http://www.gcmap.com/ Why am I posting about something as obscure as a mapping tool that creates maps for the great circle course between any two points on earth? Well first because I really appreciate the fine work and continuous improvements put in over the years by Karl and his team who started with the knowledge there was a need (an easy way for non-navigators, non=-mathematicians to see great circle courses (the shortest routes between points on … [Read more...]

Do I Need a Round Trip Ticket for a Balikbayan Stamp?

ticket

Here's a recent comment/question from a reader that is important enough, I think, to merit it’s own article here on the main site. Reason I think this should be highlighted is it points out again what I so frequently find that Filipinos and Former Filipinos seldom get much good information about their own rights and privileges here in the Philippines. I’m delighted to try to spread the news … so many of the questions and requests for help I get are sad, or have no good answer.  This … [Read more...]

Driven Crazy in the Philippines

6185795624_28f4574869.jpg

When my brother and sister and I were little, like most kids, we would watch for my dad to be heading out somewhere and run up to him, hollering, “Where you going daddy, where you going?”, hoping, of course, to be taken along for the ride. My dad had a stock answer, particularly if he wasn't interested in tasking any or all of us along.  His pet standby phrase?  “Crazy, want to go along”? I enjoy driving here in the Philippines, most of the time that is, but there are times I … [Read more...]

“But I’m Just A Filipino”

waitress-300x225_thumb.jpg

Recently I came across this great post on my colleague Tyler Tervooren’s “Advanced Riskology” blog.   One of the negative aspects of growing old seems to be that the older we get, the more people tell us to “be careful”, “avoid risk”, “don’t stick your neck out’, etc.” But to me, this is exactly the opposite from the way we ought to be thinking. Do we somehow think that by “being extra careful” we can avoid the inevitable?  How many of you chose to … [Read more...]

Philippine Visas — KISS

kissprinc

Recently I had an email from a reader who has been in contact for some time now, with questions about his pending move to the Philippines. This fellow and I had discussed visas and other ways he had been considering in planning his move, and he had narrowed things down to a couple very specific points. Great.  And I was happy to be able to help in providing some specific answers. Problem was, though, he had read so much, ponder so much, compared so many things that he had gotten … [Read more...]

Interview with Manny Paez — TravelPH.Com

forwarder

There are not many of us who have been around the Philippine Living scene for any length of time and not heard of a balik bayan box. For those who haven't, it's a heavy cardboard carton filled with "goodies" usually used for shipping to the Philippines ... literally "back to the country". If you've seen a balik bayan box there's a better than even chance it was from Manila Forwarder LLC., one of the big names in that business. Manny Paez is the founder of Manila Forwarder and several other … [Read more...]

Interview with Jeff Jenks — Travel is Fun

Recently I conducted an email interview with Jeff Jenks of Travel is Fun.  I've known Jeff from many of the on-line Philippines Groups and have used his services personally, so I can vouch for his competency.  I'm trying to get similar interviews with other agents well established in the Philippine air travel segment of the business.  I've seen a lot of folks go wrong in the past 6 or 7 years that I have been involved with Philippine living and this year I'm going to be bringing … [Read more...]

The Move — Part Two

balerwitch_marilao_komedya01_thumb

Not a lot to report today, but things are moving along well.  I've struck a deal with my son to buy our car ... nice for both of us because of the situation we're both in, so we can drive until moving day and then hand him the keys in return for cash. Went to our bank and they were pretty good ... didn't get bent out of shape at all when I told them we were going to move overseas "for a while".  ordered new checks with the new address, counted up and cashed out a whole bag full of US change … [Read more...]
